Accessibility
We want this guide to be usable with a keyboard, with a screen reader, at full zoom or on a small screen, without anything getting lost along the way. This page sets out the choices we have made and the points we still need to work on.
Our accessibility choices
- The whole site can be navigated by keyboard: the "Skip to content" link lets you jump past the menu, focus is always visible, and open panels (mobile menu, dropdowns, FAQs) close with the Escape key.
- The pages use semantic HTML: a single main heading, subheadings in hierarchical order and landmarks that assistive technology can recognise.
- Every informative image has its own alternative text.
- Text colours meet the AA contrast ratio in the WCAG guidelines, checked directly against the project's own colours.
- Browser zoom is never blocked, and the layout reflows at any screen size.
- If your device has the "reduce motion" setting turned on, the site switches off animations and smooth scrolling.
The limits we know about
- The alternative text on some of the mural photographs is still fairly basic.
- The interactive map on the Getting Here page is hard to explore with a screen reader; that is why the car park addresses are always written out in the text as well.
- In the navigation bar, white text on the coral background does not reach AA contrast.
- The collapsible FAQs need JavaScript to be enabled.
- The site has not yet been through a full formal WCAG audit.
